Grade 5 Program
- Body Changes
- PRIVATE STUFF
- Emotions
BODY CHANGES: During the first session we run through an activity with the students to see how much they know about their changing bodies. Within their booklets, there is space for them to write down changes for males and females. At the end of the activity, we will take the time to discuss each change and why it occurs. The changes discussed are for both sexes in the hopes of normalizing body changes and development for everyone and also give both all students an idea of how others grow and develop too!
PRIVATE STUFF: As we move through the common changes that occur during puberty, we move in to a little more depth regarding the male and female reproductive systems; Their function, their purpose and how to take care of them. Looking at the basic anatomy of the male reproductive system, we show how sperm is produced and released and the importance of keeping this area clean! When discussing the female reproductive system we explain how periods occur and what happens if the egg was to be fertilized. How does fertilisation happen? you’ll have to wait until next year to find out).
EMOTIONS: Totally Random has a focus on both the physical, emotional and social aspects of the growth and development of young people into adults. Taking the time to discuss with students about the impact that puberty has on our emotions has always been an important aspect of this program. Students are allowed to discover the emotions they may feel and how to deal with them. They are encouraged to consider the impact emotions have on the decision making process both for themselves and others. Engaging students in an awareness of both positive and negative emotions is essential as they progress into their last year of primary school and enter into secondary school.
